Number plates are the identity cards of the car. Some people may think they are randomly arranged numbers, but number plates are more than that. The alphabet and the first few digits have a special meaning. It makes tracking the car or car owner easier.

Which Number Plate System is Being Used Currently in the UK

The new style is not as new as you might be thinking. The number plate system applied to today’s current UK cars was introduced in 2001. It was important to introduce a new system to make the car’s identification far easier. Also, the newer number plates were fixed such that they would be read conveniently by the digital speed cameras. Moreover, the newer number plates can be easily memorized, and action can be taken immediately in case of a criminal act or accident.

What is New in The New Style Number Plates?

We will better understand the best number plate sticky pads if we contrast them with the older ones. The old number plates’ style was in use from 1983. In 2001 changes were brought to them. The 1983 version’s first two initials would mark the date of the issue. These plates were called prefix plates because their starting characters would define their issue date. The plate consisted of a letter or prefix from “A” to “Y”. Followed by numbers 1 to 3, then spaced. Soon after the space, a three-number sequence of characters would help conjecture the area of origin. “C120 KAR” would be a typical example of a number plate in 1983.

However, in 1999 the car industry was at its peak again, and the number plates were revised twice a year. Therefore, an urgency was required to change the system, and we ended up with the 2001 system.

The two important aspects of the new system are that these systems have identifiers for location and age. One can easily understand the time of the registrations and the location by reading the number plate.

How Does That Happen?

New Style number plates have a format that begins with two letters that denote the location of the registration. The registration is then followed by two numerals that indicate the year it was issued. Finally, a series of three random letters can be used to produce a variety of combinations for each location and year.

What is the Memory Tag and the Age Identifier in The New Style Number Plates?

Just other words for some simple rules explained above. The two letters the number plate begins are called memory tags because they indicate where they were first registered. AA-AY indicates Anglia, and BA-BY indicates Birmingham. Similarly, LA-LY = London, MA-MY = Manchester and Merseyside, NA-NY = North, and OA-OY = Oxford. There are other memory tags too to cover all the regions. We have mentioned only a few.

Note that I and Q letters are omitted in standard number plates.

The age identifiers are the following numbers distributed between March and September. While the earlier systems used an annual system, this new number plate style involves the biannual system. The number plates of March take their two digits from the year they are registered in. For example, a number plate of 2016 will have 16 as the second part of the number plate. The September number plates will have 50 added to the year. If you add 50 and 16, you have 66. So the number plates for September month of the same year would have 66 as the second part of the number plate.

Lastly, there is a third part of the number plate; three letters. These are randomly picked, and the owner can choose howsoever they feel fit. These letters are chosen at the time of registration.

Conclusion

The new style number plates are easily read. For example, a car number plate having ’16’ at the beginning means that this car was introduced in March 2016 and ’66’ in September 2016. This means that the car with ’16’ was registered between March and August 2016, whereas the one with ’66’ was registered between September 2016 and February 2017.
